22-year-old homeless man charged in home invasion case

Charges of aggravated robbery and aggravated burglary have been filed against a homeless man accused of breaking into a Lawrence home Tuesday morning, pistol-whipping a man inside and stealing money out of his pockets.

Travis Sharon, 22, is being held in Douglas County Jail on $50,000 bond, in connection with the crimes. He made his first appearance in district court Tuesday afternoon.

Police said they arrested Sharon after a reported home invasion and robbery involving two suspects which occurred at 12:35 a.m. Tuesday at a home in the 300 block of West 23rd Street.

Jon Shelton, a 22-year-old man inside the home, said he fought back against the robbers because his 3-year-old daughter and girlfriend were inside. The struggle left blood stains on Shelton’s clothes and throughout the home. Shelton said the robbers ended up taking just $7 from his pockets.

Shelton said he recognized one of the suspects as an acquaintance from junior high school and identified Sharon to police. Officers located the suspect at the Jayhawk Motel, 1004 N. Third St., and arrested him a few hours later.

Sharon will return to court Sept. 2 for an appearance in front of Judge Michael Malone.

Officers are still searching for the second suspect, who is described as a white male in his late teens to early 20s that has a dark complexion, stands between 5-foot-8 and 5-foot-9, weighs about 150 pounds and has dark hair and short facial hair.
