First Kansan with swine flu dies
Topeka ? Kansas has reported the first death of a resident who was diagnosed with swine flu.
State and local health officials said Thursday that the person was a middle-aged Sedgwick County resident who suffered from a chronic health condition and contracted the H1N1 virus.
Sedgwick County Health Department spokeswoman Jenni McCausland said swine flu weakened the victim but was not the primary cause of death. She said the person died earlier this week, but had no other details.
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment said the person’s status as a swine flu victim was confirmed July 30.
Swine flu cases have been reported in 41 of the state’s 105 counties, and 23 people have been hospitalized.
