Former commissioner sentenced in sign theft

? A former Johnson County commissioner who was videotaped last year stealing his opponent’s campaign signs has been sentenced to probation.

The Kansas City Star reported on its Web site Tuesday that John Toplikar accepted an agreement where he’ll serve 12 months probation and, if he stays out of trouble during that time, prosecutors will dismiss a misdemeanor theft charge.

Court records show that the diversion agreement was approved Friday.

Olathe police charged Toplikar last October after officers found two signs belonging to his opponent, Calvin Hayden, in Toplikar’s van. Hayden’s wife videotaped Toplikar removing the signs and a campaign worker put it on the YouTube Web site.

Toplikar lost his re-election bid two weeks later.
