Group plans lawsuit against government to stop SLT

A group of Haskell Indian Nations University students and others are planning a Friday press conference to announce a lawsuit to stop the expansion of the South Lawrence Trafficway.

In a statement released Monday, Haskell Wetlands Preservation Organization, the Sierra Club, Save the Wakarusa Wetlands, the Audubon Society, KU Environs, the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation and KU EcoJustice announced they would file suit against the Federal Highway Administration challenging the Record of Decision released earlier this year. In the press release, Haskell students said they were taking the lead on this litigation because the land where the new SLT is sacred to many Native Americans.

A press conference is scheduled for 5 p.m. Friday when more information will be released.
