A mistaken report of a kidnapping Thursday afternoon led to lockdowns in two De Soto schools.
De Soto USD 232 communications director Alvie Cater said the district received a call about 1:45 p.m. from the Johnson County Sheriff's Office to initiate an external lockdown as a safety precaution because of a non-school event. Following safety protocol, the district asked to lock doors at Starside Elementary and Lexington Trails Middle schools.
Tom Erickson, communications officer for the Johnson County Sheriff's Office, said deputies responding to the call asked for the lockdown as a pre-cautionary move because the middle school is about a half-mile from the site of the reported incident and the elementary school is a mile away. The call to lock down De Soto High School on the same campus was canceled when deputies found the reported suspect.
"There was no attempted kidnapping," Erickson said. "As happens, the calls come out but how it ends up is a different result than was than what the report was. As soon as we found him, we started getting the story laid out."
