Tonganoxie attorney among nominees for judgeship

A Tonganoxie attorney is among three attorneys nominated to fill a judge vacancy in Leavenworth County.

The 1st Judicial District Nominating Commission on Tuesday submitted the names of three area attorneys to fill a judge vacancy created by the Oct. 1 retirement of Philip C. Lacey.

Nominees include Michael D. Gibbens, Tonganoxie; Gerald R. Kuckelman, Atchison County attorney; and Cheryl A. Marquardt, an assistant Leavenworth County attorney.

Gov. Kathleen Sebelius will have 30 days to make the appointment. The nominating commission will then submit the names of three people to fill a second vacancy in the district, which was created by the Oct. 1 retirement of Frederick N. Stewart.
