Army Pvt. James T. Burns has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Sill in Lawton, Okla.

During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission and received instruction and training exercises in drill and ceremonies, Army history, core values and traditions, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, rifle marksmanship, weapons use, map reading and land navigation, foot marches, armed and unarmed combat, and field maneuvers and tactics.

Burns is the son of Robin Burns, Fort Hood, Texas, and the grandson of Gail Funk, Lawrence.

•Air Force Airman John C. Hughes has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.

During the six weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization, core values, and military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches; and participated in physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises and special training in human relations.

Airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an Associate in Applied Science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. Hughes earned distinction as an honor graduate.

He is a 2002 graduate of Tonganoxie High School and the son of Frank and Cynthia Hughes, Tonganoxie.

Air Force Airman Luke S. Braddock has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.

Braddock is the son of Lana and Seoh Braddock, Baldwin City.

•Army National Guard Spec. Jeremy L. Hughes has completed the Warrior Leader Course at Camp Bondsteel, Kosovo. The course is part of the Army’s Noncommissioned Officer Education System. The soldier is currently deployed to Kosovo from a U.S.-based National Guard or Reserve unit supporting the NATO-led peacekeeping and security mission as a member of the Kosovo Forces.

The 30-day course is designed to provide the Army with soldiers who can visualize, describe and execute squad-level operations in varied operational environments and battlefields. Soldiers with the rank of specialist or corporal learn to be noncommissioned officers focused on leading, training, caring, maintaining, and warrior skills. The soldiers are prepared for promotion to sergeant to serve as leaders of teams, crews and squads. The intensive, rigorous course emphasizes leadership and includes training management, map reading, land navigation, drill and ceremony, war fighting and a field training exercise.

Hughes, a fire direction control specialist with two years of military service, is assigned to the 1st Battalion, 129th Field Artillery, Maryville, Mo.

He is the son of Carrie K. McGinness, Tonganoxie.

•Army ROTC Cadet Fran G. Glass was awarded a United Services Automobile Association (USAA) National Scholarship worth $1,500.

This scholarship endowment is made possible by the USAA insurance program. The purpose of the USAA scholarship is to encourage active enlisted members of the Kansas National Guard (Army and Air) and their dependents to pursue degrees in higher education at an accredited institution of their choice.

Glass, a 2004 graduate of Free State High School, is the daughter of Steven and Edwina Glass, Lawrence. She is an Army ROTC cadet and student at Kansas University.
