KBI probes claim of abuse in jail

? The Kansas Bureau of Investigation confirms it’s probing possible abuse of force in the booking room at the Hamilton County Jail last week.

The Hutchinson News reported Thursday that Syracuse resident Chris Barr said he was handcuffed by an officer who arrested him on his wife’s complaint Nov. 17. Barr said he had been drinking at home and fell over a table, which prompted his wife to call 911.

He said police caught him after he ran to his father’s house. At the booking room, Barr said he refused the officer’s order to sit in a metal cage for prisoners.

Barr said that the officer hit him so hard that he bent a metal bench in the jail — and that he was charged with criminal damage to property. Sheriff Richard Garza declined to comment.

Barr said the alleged assault was caught on videotape.
