A former Basehor Elementary School fifth-grade teacher entered a no-contest plea this week to three counts of inappropriately touching students.
A Leavenworth County district judge convicted Floyd M. Rogers Jr. of three counts of attempted aggravated indecent liberties with a child. Leavenworth County Attorney Frank Kohl said the charges were amended from the original aggravated indecent liberties with a child because it was alleged touching was done over students’ clothing.
Kohl said that Rogers, of Bonner Springs, has no criminal history, so prosecutors would not oppose a judge giving him probation. The incidents are alleged to have begun during the 2004-2005 school year, and Rogers later left the Basehor-Linwood School District after charges were filed.
“He’s going to, first of all, no longer be able to maintain status as a teacher. He can’t be licensed, and he will be registered as a sex offender,” Kohl said. “That pretty much takes away his ability to be around kids.”
Kohl said the plea deal was also supported by the victims’ parents because the victims no longer will have to testify in the case. Rogers will be sentenced Jan. 9.
