Girard ? Republican Michael Gayoso of Frontenac is the new Crawford County attorney.

The Pittsburg Morning Sun reports that Gayoso was declared the winner of the race Saturday, after a hand recount of more than 15,500 ballots found he defeated incumbent John Gutierrez, a Democrat from Cherokee, by about 40 votes.

Gutierrez had asked for the recount after a machine recount earlier this week gave Gayoso a 14-vote lead.

County commissioners sought the machine recount after it was discovered that programming errors had switched votes on some ballots cast at Countryside Christian Church.
