Bar association honors two Lawrence legal professionals
Two Lawrence law professionals recently received awards from the Kansas Bar Association.
Former Supreme Court Justice Fred Six was recognized for his commitment of service to the legal profession and cultural life of Kansas, the association said. He received the Phil Lewis Medal of Distinction, the association’s highest award, during its annual meeting in Topeka.
“Six’s dedication to justice and his integrity are hallmarks of his career,” association spokeswoman Susan McKaskle said in a news release.
Six, a Kansas University and University of Virginia graduate, was appointed to the Kansas Court of Appeals in 1987. A year later, he was appointed to the Kansas Supreme Court, where he retired in 2003. Six remains involved with legal and cultural communities service, McKaskle said.
His son, Steve Six, also of Lawrence, took over as the state’s attorney general on Feb. 1.
Lawyer Calvin Karlin was recognized for his commitment to the highest standards of honesty, integrity and courtesy of the legal profession, the association said. He received the KBA’s Professionalism Award.
Karlin, managing member of Barber Emerson L.C. Law Firm, volunteers on the association’s fee dispute resolution and professional ethics grievance committees and is a past director and president of the Douglas County Bar Association.
He’s also been involved in several local organizations. His wife, Janice Karlin, is a judge for the United States Bankruptcy Court.
