Johnson County Commission race still undecided

? An estimated 675 provisional ballots will determine who wins the sixth district seat on the Johnson County Commission. Only 52 votes separate incumbent John Toplikar and challenger Calvin Hayden for the district that includes west Olathe, Gardner and De Soto.

The race garnered national attention after Toplikar, seeking his third term on the commission, was caught on video by a Hayden campaign worker allegedly stealing his signs.

The video was posted on Hayden’s campaign Web site and YouTube.com. Toplikar was cited by Olathe Police with misdemeanor theft when they found two signs in his van. He has a November 26 appearance in Olathe Municipal Court.

Results from advance ballots released by the Johnson County Election Office about 8:15 p.m. Tuesday put Toplikar, with more than 54 percent of the vote, ahead of Hayden, a recently retired 27-year veteran of the Sheriff’s department.

When the unofficial final results were posted about two hours later, Hayden pulled ahead with 17,632 votes to Toplikar’s 17,580.
