Bill prompted by Tonganoxie teen’s death has been approved

? A bill aimed at increasing testing for drugs and alcohol in drivers involved in serious accidents was approved today by the Legislature.

The measure was prompted by the death of Tonganoxie teen-ager Amanda Bixby, who was killed on Valentine’s Day 2007 in a wreck near Basehor.

The driver who caused the accident wasn’t tested for drugs, and was later fined and placed on six months’ probation after pleading no contest to failure to yield at a stop sign.

Amanda’s parents, Dennis and Denise Bixby of Tonganoxie, have been pushing for more stringet testing requirements since before the legislative session started in January.

They watched today from the gallery in the House and Senate as lawmakers gave the bill unanimous approval.

Dennis Bixby said he was pleased with the final bill.

“This brings out the best in Kansas politics because it didn’t matter Republican, Democrat, independent; they just tried to want to get a bill that would work,” he said.

The legislation — House Bill 2617 — now goes to Gov. Kathleen Sebelius for her consideration.
