‘Amanda’s Law’ goes to full Senate

“Amanda’s Law” got a step closer to becoming a state law Tuesday.

House Bill 2617 passed the Senate Judiciary Committee and will move to the Senate floor.

Under the bill, if a car accident results in a fatality or serious injury, police officers shall order a drug test.

Under current law, police officers can order a drug test if they have reasonable grounds that drugs were used.

The bill is named for Tonganoxie teen Amanda Bixby, who died in an accident on Valentine’s Day 2007 on U.S. Highway 24-40 near Basehor.
