Feds want power plant for NBAF

TOPEKA The federal government has asked Kansas and other states vying for a new Department of Homeland Security laboratory to commit to building a power plant for the facility, officials confirmed Friday.
"They want a totally self-sustained operation," Gov. Kathleen Sebelius said.
Sebelius said the state is looking at what a plant would cost and how it would be funded.
"There was a number thrown out by the feds that we think is just wrong for Kansas," she said.
Homeland Security has proposed a $450 million National Bio- and Agro-Defense Facility that would focus on potential food supply threats. DHS has requested that the facility have a separate gas-fired power plant, Sebelius said.
Six sites, including Kansas State University, are in the running for the lab.

Maybe the Governor should suggest building some windmills nearby to power it.

Shame somebody didn't jam a hunk of coal in the Governor's mouth as she made the announcement. With her teeth clenched that tightly - the coal would have turned to diamonds by the end of the news conference.

if they truly want it to be a self-sustained operation then they certainly should use wind generated power…

Gas power plants make no sense. Natural gas is already in a usable form, ready to be delivered to the consumer. It's not practical to burn it to change it to electricity. Plus, gas is the best fuel for home heating, etc., and it is senseless to deplete it for electricity generation.
How about …….. Safe…….Clean……Nuclear……….?

We don't want it. Homeland Security is really run by Eric Cartman. Let them build it in, oh, say, Arkabraskahoma.

Does anyone know if natural gas gives off carbon dioxide? Surely, we can just have the Sierra Club pedal bikes with generators attached. Our Governor's little working together image is starting to tarnish.

DHS has requested that the facility have a separate gas-fired power plant. The host state/city would have to construct and finance a central utility plant for the NBAF facility. The new power plant would serve as the primary (and exclusive) power source for NBAF, and the city-grid would operate as the backup. To finance the power plant for the NBAF, State bonds would have to be issued.
This is the issue; The Kansas legislature would have to authorize these bonds. Sebelius has 2 weeks to get it through the legislature or totally lose the chance of landing the NBAF. The legislature seems to want the Holcomb power plant.
Sebelius is between a rock and a hard place.
If she deals, she's a hypocrite and bad on environmental policy…
If she doesn't, she doesn't care about economic development.

the same administration that said we are just in a slow -down, not a recession and today the shrub changed his story now we are in a recession, but we had a small recession during 9-11 then wecame out of it…ok ya boob which one is it? The guy is a complete joke and all of u who voted for him should be really proud of your choice.
Gas will be 4.00 / gallon….and the final estimate will be 5.00/ gallon. Theres gonna be alot of suv's on the used car lots.
Bush admitted a few days ago that he didnt know gas was 4.00/gal.,….duh well yeah….he has a fleet of limos and does pay for one drop of fuel, and he will problably get his gas for free when he goes back to texas with his tail between his legs.

This is how the Federal Government weeds out the weaklings. Just as they brought up staying in their current location after all these states thought they were in the running.
My money says this plant will remain in its current locale. Much adoo about nothing. No need to get your panties in a bunch.

I'm not sure, but maybe this is what we're talking about?
“Gas turbine plants use the dynamic pressure from flowing gases to directly operate the turbine. Natural-gas fuelled turbine plants can start rapidly and so are used to supply “peak” energy during periods of high demand, though at higher cost than base-loaded plants. These may be comparatively small units, and sometimes completely unmanned, being remotely operated. This type was pioneered by the UK, Princetown[5] being the world's first, commissioned in 1959.”

Since burning natural gas creates co2 I bet Brimby will tell the gov to forget this thing.
Does she still get to spend the $100+ million the legisleaure just passed, right before this revelation???
What timing!! The gov would never try to get over on citizens like that, would she??
