Man charged in relation to underage sex sting

? Federal grand jury indictments were announced on Friday, charging a Missouri man with attempting to entice a child into having sex.

Derek M. Marsocci, 45, faces five counts of using a computer and a telephone in an attempt to entice a child under the age of 18 into engaging in sexual activity. A sixth count alleges that Marsocci traveled from Missouri to Kansas for the purposes of engaging in sex with a child under 18, a violation of interstate commerce laws. The incidents allegedly took place last November and December.

Marsocci was arrested Dec. 13 in Olathe by Baldwin City police and Johnson County sheriff’s officers following an undercover online sex sting operation by Baldwin officers. After a preliminary hearing in Douglas County District Court in January Judge Michael Malone ruled that Marsocci should be tried on one count of child enticement.

That charge, however, was dismissed as of Friday upon the announcement of the federal indictments.

If Marsocci is convicted in federal court, he could be sentenced to 10 years to life on each of the enticement charges, along with a $250,000 fines. He could face a maximum of 15 years in prison for crossing the state line to have sex with a child.
