City crew aids in tornado clean-up
Members of a street crew from the city’s Public Works Department are helping with clean-up efforts in Manhattan this week after the city was hit by a tornado June 11.
Eight crew members and a supervisor arrived in Manhattan on Monday with three dump trucks, two loaders, a crew cab and other tools to be a self-sufficient team and provide assistance, said Tom Orzulak, street division manager.
“It’s just helping among cities,” Orzulak said. “A big tornado can come here, too, and I’d be calling this guy back and say, come here and help me. And that’s basically what it is, help between communities.”
Lawrence crews have previously been sent to Wichita and Emporia following tornadoes there.
The crew will return Friday afternoon. The department has 44 crew workers total.
