Medal of Honor recipient venerated

The 1st Infantry Division paid homage Thursday to a Pennsylvania soldier who received the Medal of Honor posthumously for sacrificing himself to save other soldiers in Iraq.

A plaque in honor of Specialist Ross McGinnis was unveiled during the dedication of Victory Park near the 1st Infantry Division headquarters at Fort Riley.

McGinnis was in the gunner’s hatch of a Humvee on Dec. 4, 2006, when a grenade sailed past him and into the vehicle where four other soldiers sat. He shouted a warning, then jumped back-first on the grenade. It blew up and killed him.

McGinnis is the Army’s second recipient of the Medal of Honor from the Iraq war.
