Police find man seen in video near slayings at bakery

? A man seen on a 2002 videotape at a bakery where two women were killed has contacted police, but investigators said they’re not close to an arrest.

Police in November released an enhanced image from the videotape, recorded at a nearby business on Sept. 4, 2002, when employee Mandi Alexander, 24, and customer Mary A. Drake, 79, were found stabbed to death at the Dolly Madison Bakery.

Great Bend Police Chief Dean Akings said Wednesday that the man in the video was located outside of Kansas and is cooperating with police.

“He gave us a call and said, ‘You don’t need to look anymore. I’m the guy in the video and I didn’t do the homicide,’ ” Akings said.

The man’s proximity to the crime scene, his clothing and the inability to identify him led investigators to release the tape and call him a person of interest in the case.

Police said his clothes, including a black Harley-Davidson T-shirt and a ball cap featuring a maple leaf, closely matched a description given by a witness who saw someone locking the door of the business that evening.

After a photograph from the enhanced tape was released, family members of the man contacted investigators, Akings said.

Akings declined to release more information about the man but said he lived in Great Bend in September 2002.
