Couple was checked out before adoption
A Haysville husband and wife who adopted a girl the man is now accused of sexually assaulting passed a series of background checks before the adoption, the state says.
The adoptive mother was an aunt of the girl, who is now 13. Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services spokeswoman Michelle Ponce said the state had approved the girl’s placement in the couple’s home about a year before her adoption.
Ponce said nothing turned up during a pre-adoptive home study conducted by a department contractor that included criminal-background checks, interviews of the parents and a home inspection.
The father is charged with 13 counts of sex crimes, including rape and sodomy, against his adopted daughter or her girlfriend from April to September 2007.
