City leads nation in respiratory illness

? Statistics show that Wichita leads the nation in the percentage of sick children who have respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV, in the past two weeks.

That is according to the 200 cities that report to a health care data service known as Surveillance Data. They show Wichita had the highest percentage of RSV positive tests at 65 percent. The numbers are based on data sent in by Wesley Medical Center and via Christi Regional Medical Center.

Nurse Lois Rahal says no one knows why the Wichita numbers are so high. She says staff has speculated the spread may be related to the fluctuating temperatures, which affect children and viruses.
