Suspect in carjacking charged in federal court
Kansas City, Kan. ? Gun charges were filed in U.S. District Court Wednesday against a man accused in a Douglas County carjacking case.
Edward Wise, 23, is charged with one count of possession of a firearm with intent to cause harm, one count of brandishing a firearm during a carjacking and one count of unlawful possession of a firearm after a felony conviction.
An indictment alleges that on Jan. 30 in Lawrence, Wise brandished a 9mm Ruger pistol when he stole an occupied Toyota Highlander.
If convicted, Wise faces penalties ranging from a minimum of five years to life in prison and fines up to $250,000.
Wise was already charged in Douglas County District Court in the same carjacking case. Those charges include one count of aggravated robbery, two counts of aggravated assault with a handgun, two counts of aggravated assault with a motor vehicle and one count of fleeing or attempting to elude police, all felonies. He is to be arraigned Tuesday. The charges can be read, and he can enter a plea.
Douglas County District Attorney Charles Branson said he conferred with federal prosecutors concerning the case.
“The feds have a much bigger hammer,” Branson said.
The local charges likely will be dismissed soon.
