Committee dismisses proposal for free parks

The Senate budget committee has rejected a plan allowing Kansans to use state parks for free.

The plan came from Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, who included it in her proposed budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1. The state would have set aside $1.6 million in general tax revenues to make up for the lost fees.

Last year, the state cut admission fees to its 24 parks for Kansans in half, to $4.20 per vehicle. Some senators want to wait another year to see how the policy is working and worry that allowing people in for free will lead to more crime.
