Lawrence Habitat for Humanity announces the hiring of Grace Hoyt as director of development, responsible for helping to streamline the agency's efforts to raise money, boost community awareness and increase volunteer activity.

She also will support building programs and work on behalf of Habitat ReStore, which supports such programs by selling new and used building materials, furniture and appliances.

Hoyt, a Kansas University graduate, has worked previously with Samaritan's Purse, an international nonprofit agency, and Jewish Vocational Service, which provides refugee-resettlement services in Kansas City, Mo.

Habitat has built 68 homes in Lawrence since 1989. The projects accommodate more than 150 adults and children with help of more than 3,000 volunteers.

    The rising overhead of charity.

I don't know that you would call Habitat a "charity". The houses are not given away, and house payments made are used to buy materials to buy materials to build more houses.

This is one of the few local charities that I give both time and money to - completely circumventing the United Way bogus middleman. I can also see the good this organization provides the community. By all means, a development officer should help Lawrence H for H now and in the future.
