Leavenworth ? A Tonganoxie man, who pleaded no contest to a charge of falsely reporting that an intruder shot him in July, will spend 48 hours in Leavenworth County Jail and must serve one year of probation.

On Friday, Leavenworth County District Judge Gunnar Sundby handed the 24-year-old Johnathan Wilkerson a 90-day sentence, with all but 48 hours of that sentence suspended.

Deputy County Attorney Roger Marrs said the Tonganoxie Police Department estimated it cost $5,000 for “a manhunt for this individual that didn’t even exist.”

The cost included use of search dogs and helicopters. Sundby said it may not be known what was spent on the search and handed down the jail time in lieu of ordering restitution.

On July 11, Wilkerson told Tonganoxie police that he had been shot by a 5-foot-10 black man wearing a white T-shirt who had broken into his stepfather’s Tonganoxie home. The report sparked a manhunt that included the Basehor Police Department, Leavenworth County Sheriff’s Office and Kansas Highway Patrol troopers. Wilkerson’s nonlife-threatening injuries were treated, and he was released from Lawrence Memorial Hospital the same day.

Another misdemeanor charge of criminal use of a financial card on Aug. 5 was dismissed.

Wilkerson, who did not make a statement during his sentencing, pleaded no contest to the false report charge on Nov. 21.
