Carjacker pleads to federal gun charges
A 24-year-old Kansas City, Kan., man who led officers on a destructive high-speed chase in January that ended in downtown Lawrence has pleaded guilty to two gun charges in federal court.
Edward Wise faces at least seven years in federal prison after he pleaded guilty earlier this month to one count of brandishing a firearm during a violent crime and one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm.
On Jan. 30, Wise stole a North Lawrence woman’s van, and after officers chased him from Leavenworth County back to Lawrence, he also carjacked a sport utility vehicle from another Lawrence woman near 19th and Massachusetts streets.
Wise then crashed that vehicle downtown, and he tried to use a gun to steal another vehicle before a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper incapacitated him with a Taser. Wise was originally charged in Douglas County, but those charges were dropped because the federal gun charges carried a stiffer sentence.
U.S. District Judge Kathryn Vratil will sentence him March 17.
