Accident sends 8 to hospital
Eight people were hospitalized after a Thursday morning accident between two sport utility vehicles at the intersection of 15th and Iowa streets, Lawrence police said Friday.
Police said Maria E. Lyimo, 35, of Lawrence, failed to stop her southbound Ford Explorer at a red light and collided with a westbound Dodge Durango, driven by Jacqueline Gercone, 24, of Independence, Mo. The accident occurred shortly before 2 a.m., and alcohol is being investigated as a contributing factor, police said.
Amanda Gercone, 21, of Independence, Mo., was ejected from the back of the Durango and taken by ambulance to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, where a hospital spokesman said she was treated and released.
Debra Nesbitt, 44, of Independence, Mo.; Denise Sanders, 23, and Lynsee Mallinson, 22, both of Warrensburg, Mo.; Kristina Koehler, 23, of Overland Park; and Lauren Vernon, 22, of Lawrence, were all transported to LMH, police said. These women were also in Gercone’s SUV and are no longer hospitalized.
Two passengers in Lyimo’s vehicle were injured. Lindsey Williams, 26, of Lawrence, was transported with nonlife-threatening injuries to Kansas University Hospital, where a spokesman wasn’t able to provide an update on her condition. Police said Courtney Nez, 24, of Lawrence, was taken by ambulance to LMH with possible broken bones; a hospital spokeswoman said Nez was in fair condition.
No injuries were reported for the two drivers.
