Union member struck, killed crossing street

? Wichita police have identified the union member who was struck and killed by a pickup truck as 45-year-old Jeff Hart.

The accident remains under investigation.

Hart was hit Monday morning while walking from his car to join fellow union members rallying outside the Hawker Beechcraft aircraft plant. The Machinists went on strike there two weeks ago.

The driver of the pickup truck was a fellow striker heading to the rally, The Wichita Eagle reported. No charges were filed Monday.

Sgt. Charles Newman said Hart was struck shortly before 5 a.m. and died at a hospital about 90 minutes later. The strike rally was canceled following the accident.

Machinists on Aug. 2 rejected Hawker Beechcraft’s contract proposal, with 90 percent voting against the offer and 89 percent voting to strike.
