Topeka ? Stephen Colbert has a standing invitation from Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius to spend a night in the historic jail in Canton, Kan.

Colbert, host of Comedy Central’s “The Colbert Report,” jokingly insulted the town of 800 residents Wednesday night, saying, “You can smell that dump all the way from Topeka.” Canton, in McPherson County, is about 105 miles southwest of the capital.

Colbert’s remarks came as he apologized to Canton, Ga., for calling it crappy last week. He said he actually meant the Kansas town.

Sebelius mailed and faxed him a letter Thursday. She said it was a shame that he had missed the McPherson County Fair, “where we surely could have gotten you bucked off something.”

She then extended the invitation for a night in jail.
