Inmate in crate escape to answer gun charge

? A convicted Kansas killer who escaped from prison in a dog crate is due in federal court on a firearms charge.

John Manard was ordered to appear Monday before U.S. Magistrate James P. O’Hara in Kansas City, Kan., so proceedings could start on a charge of unlawfully possessing a firearm after a felony conviction.

Last month, prosecutors sought an order to have Manard transferred from the state prison at El Dorado so he could be prosecuted.

With the help of prison volunteer Toby Young, Manard escaped from the state prison at Lansing in February 2006 by hiding in a dog crate inside her Safe Harbor Prison Dog Program van. They were captured 12 days later in Tennessee.

Young pleaded guilty to state and federal charges and is expected to be released from prison in May after serving a 21-month sentence.
