Fort Riley soldier’s stabbing investigated

? Army officials are investigating a weekend stabbing that left one soldier dead and another in military custody.

Police and Fort Riley officials said Monday that Pvt. Antonio Ortiz, 24, of Yonkers, N.Y., died early Saturday after being stabbed outside Silverado’s Bar in the Aggieville business district near Kansas State University in Manhattan, about 15 miles from Fort Riley. Ortiz was found in a nearby parking lot with a severe wound to his abdomen and taken to Mercy Health Center in Manhattan, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Fort Riley officials said Spc. Latoya Pitts, 23, of Edmond, Okla., was being held Monday, although she had not been formally charged. Riley County police identified her as Latoya Fields, but Fort Riley spokeswoman Alison Kohler said Fields is her maiden name.

Both soldiers are with Company D, 125th Brigade Support Battalion at Fort Riley. Neither previously have been deployed.

According to a statement from Riley County Police Capt. John Doehling, there had been reports of fights near the bar Saturday when officers arrived. Investigators determined that Ortiz and Pitts were involved in an argument earlier in the evening. Witnesses told police that the two had a previous romantic relationship.

A fight began outside the bar after closing and moved to a parking lot north of Silverado’s. Doehling said Ortiz was stabbed near a parked car by Pitts and collapsed. Witnesses said Pitts left the scene with a friend but was later located and detained at Fort Riley by military police, Doehling said.

The case has been turned over to Fort Riley authorities and any charges will be filed in military court, Doehling said.

Kohler said no other soldiers were involved in the stabbing. Pitts was being held in at the Dickinson County Jail in Abilene because Fort Riley has no jail.

It was the second time in four months that a Fort Riley soldier has been killed in a homicide.

In July, Spc. Christian Quinones, 21, of San Diego, died of a gunshot wound to the chest in a shooting at an apartment complex in Junction City. Sgt. Castulo J. Salas, 27, also of San Diego, faces numerous military charges, including murder, for the death. Salas’ next court date was scheduled for today.

Fort Riley is home to more than 15,000 soldiers and is headquarters of the 1st Infantry Division. More than 8,000 soldiers are deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan.
