Windom ? Officials have identified the woman killed in a McPherson County house fire as 23-year-old Kandy Ann White.

Firefighters haven’t found the cause of the fire about 8:30 a.m. Thursday in a home at Windom, 12 miles west of McPherson.

A family of five who were downstairs were able to escape the flames. But White, a cousin to the family, was upstairs and could not get out.

Capt. Joe Hoffman of the McPherson County Sheriff’s Department said a family member and a neighbor went upstairs to try to rescue White, but the smoke was too thick.

He said a firefighter also tried unsuccessfully to rescue her.
