1-year-old boy critical after attack by pit bull
Wichita ? A 1-year-old boy was in critical condition Friday after a pit bull mauled him at a Wichita apartment he was visiting with his mother Thanksgiving Day, police said.
The boy underwent a complex surgery at Wesley Medical Center, said Sam Serrill, the hospital’s chief operating officer. A plastic surgeon was involved in the uncommon procedure to reattach a piece of scalp about 8 inches by 4 inches on the back of the boy’s head.
The boy also suffered bite wounds on his cheeks and puncture wounds on his buttocks, Wichita police Sgt. Bruce Watts said.
Officials didn’t release the child’s name.
The mother, in her 20s, told police that she and her child had been visiting her boyfriend’s apartment when the attack suddenly occurred near her, Watts said.
The woman first tried to subdue the dog with pepper spray or something similar, but the spray “had no effect” on the dog, Watts said.
She tried to pull the dog off of her son, and the dog bit her on the arm.
It appears that the dog belonged to the man’s ex-girlfriend and the animal had been staying at the apartment, Watts said.
