More than 50,000 reach Capitol dome

? There’s no place in Kansas like the Capitol dome.

More than 50,000 people have made the journey to the top of the Capitol dome since it was reopened in January 2006, officials said.

“This is an amazing feat, considering that the balcony at the very top accommodates only about 30 visitors at a time,” said Capitol tour coordinator Andrea Burton. “We sometimes refer to it as the Mount Everest of Topeka.”

Mary Madden, education director of the Kansas State Historical Society, said, “This has been a highly successful tour program.”

The Capitol is open to the public six days a week for tours. For more information on dome tours, call (785) 296-3966 or visit the KSHS Web site at More than 50,000 reach Capitol dome.
