Young Obama fan helps rally support

Eight-year-old Olivia Boldridge, Lawrence, had an unforgettable experience during the weekend.

The young Barack Obama fan got to meet him during his Democratic presidential campaign event Saturday in Kansas City, Mo. To top it off, she was asked to read a letter she had written about him during the fundraiser that she attended with her parents, Claudine and Bill Boldridge.

“She was excited to see, for the first time in her lifetime, a black man was running for president,” her mother said. “My husband and I have taught her that people in her race have come a long way. We’ve educated her on Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King.”

At one point, the applause for Olivia’s speech grew so loud, the little girl assumed she should just stop reading, her mom said. With a little encouragement, though, she read on.

Now, she has even bigger plans.

“She said to me, ‘Now that I did this, do you think he’ll let me go to his inauguration?’ and I said, ‘Olivia, you can sure try,'” Claudine Boldridge said.
