Soldier death puts total for Fort Riley near 100

A 1st Infantry Division soldier from Minneapolis, Minn., was killed Sunday in Baghdad, the Army said Wednesday.

Spc. Robert J. Dixon, 27, was killed when a roadside bomb exploded near his vehicle. He was the 98th Fort Riley soldier killed in Iraq since the war began.

Dixon was assigned to 1st Squadron, 4th Cavalry, 4th Brigade of the 1st Infantry Division. It was his first deployment to Iraq. He left with the brigade in February for 15 months overseas.

More than 6,000 Fort Riley soldiers are deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, with additional units scheduled to leave later this year.
