Wheat weathered conditions well; 2 percent lost to winter

? This season’s winter wheat weathered the harsh Kansas winter well, with just 2 percent of the crop lost to winterkill, Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service said Monday.

The wet spring also has bolstered the outlook for the 2007 crop.

In its weekly crop weather update, the agency reported that 22 percent of the crop was in excellent and 50 percent in good condition. About 24 percent was rated in fair shape, while just 4 percent was in poor condition.

Other indicators also were favorable with about 92 percent of the crop showing no insect infestation and 89 percent showing no disease presence.

The agency said planting oats, topdressing wheat and getting the ground ready for spring planting were the major farm activities of the week. About 53 percent of the state’s oats have been planted.

All the rain also is replenishing topsoil moisture, with 86 percent of the state’s topsoil moisture reported adequate or surplus. Subsoil moisture levels were reported 76 percent adequate to surplus.

Range and pastures also are greening up with all the recent rains. The agency rated their condition as 29 percent good to excellent and 45 percent fair. About 26 percent remained in poor to very poor condition.
