K.C. driver charged with wounding officer
A Kansas City man already facing federal carjacking charges is accused of shooting a police officer who had pulled him over for a traffic violation.
Frederick D. Darrington, 18, of Kansas City, was charged Wednesday with five counts, including first-degree assault on a law enforcement officer. Police say he fired more than 30 bullets at the officer, hitting him in the ankle.
Jackson County prosecutors said Darrington initially tried to elude the officer June 5 before pulling over and opening fire with a Tech-9 semiautomatic weapon.
The officer managed to dive into his car after he was shot. He also cut his head when a bullet struck the laptop computer in his vehicle, prosecutors said.
Police found Darrington hiding in a garage about an hour later. He is in federal custody on charges filed earlier this year in connection with two carjackings.
Bond on the Jackson County charges is set at $500,000.
