President Bush to visit Wichita

? President Bush will be in Wichita next week to help launch the opening of a new Boys and Girls Club.

Bush will tour the new north Wichita complex June 15 and meet some of the children it serves, said Jan Davis, chief professional officer of Boys and Girls Clubs of South Central Kansas.

“I think it’ll have an impact on the kids and instill in them that this is a community project to provide them with more opportunities,” Davis said.

Joining Bush on the tour will be Russ Meyer, chairman emeritus of Cessna Aircraft Co. and a prominent local philanthropist who spearheaded the fundraising drive for the new complex.

Bush also plans to appear at a fundraiser for Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., on the same day, Davis said.

A White House spokesman said the president’s official schedule for next week has not been announced.

Boys and Girls Clubs of America offer children a safe place to play and learn under adult supervision, often helping kids in inner cities stay out of trouble. The clubs offer a range of activities after school and during the summers, including art, sports and even homework help.

While a few programs already have started at the new complex, Davis said a grand opening is planned for this summer after final construction is complete.
