Kansas wheat harvest wrapping up

Almost all the wheat in Kansas has been harvested, with little rain last week allowing farmers to get into their fields, the Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service said Monday.

More than six days were suitable for fieldwork, the service said, and farmers have harvested 98 percent of the wheat.

Topsoil moisture is 6 percent very short, 33 percent short, 57 percent adequate and 4 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture is 2 percent very short, 23 percent short, 71 percent adequate and 4 percent surplus.

The statistics service said 91 percent of the corn has silked, compared with 90 percent last year and 82 percent for the five-year average. The crop is rated 3 percent very poor, 8 percent poor, 25 percent fair, 48 percent good and 16 percent excellent.

When it comes to soybeans, 62 percent have bloomed, the same as the five-year average. Soybean condition is rated 1 percent very poor, 5 percent poor, 34 percent fair, 50 percent good and 10 percent excellent.
