Inmate in custody after brief escape

A Lansing Correctional Facility inmate is back in custody after a brief escape Wednesday.

Officials said Mark A. Henderson, 50, escaped from the prison’s vehicle maintenance department, where he was assigned to work. Henderson left the prison driving a facility vehicle.

He escaped at 11:08 a.m., and law enforcement officers apprehended him about an hour later in Platte County, Mo., which is just across the state line from Leavenworth.

Henderson is serving a 10-to-40-year sentence on a voluntary manslaughter charge in connection with a death that occurred May 10, 1978, and an aggravated battery that took place Sept. 20, 1980.

Henderson is in custody and is awaiting extradition to Kansas.
