Birthday wish

To the editor:

“What would you like for your birthday?” If someone were to ask me, I would say, “I would like for someone to not lose his or her life on my birthday.” I can think of no greater gift than for someone considering an abortion to decide on that day, “I will let my baby live instead of having that abortion.”

That is why, since 1991, with only one exception I can recall, I have spent part of my birthday at Tiller’s clinic in Wichita. I walk along the sidewalk and pray that someone, somewhere, will reconsider and choose life on that day. It is my way of thanking God for my life.

So as I was reading the list of charges Attorney General Paul Morrison had brought against Tiller (Journal-World, June 29), I was saddened to find that three babies had been aborted on my birthday. I didn’t expect Tiller to close up shop as a sort of “national holiday” for my birthday, but my reason for being there suddenly came into sharper focus.

God answered that prayer on my birthday in 2004! (There may have been other times, but He allowed me to see this one.) Just as I was arriving, the sidewalk counselor told me she had heard that someone who had earlier dropped off a patient was coming back to pick her up because she had changed her mind! Thank you, God! I continue to pray there will be many more changed hearts, including Tiller’s.
