Pizza Hut infested with 200 roaches

? A downtown Pizza Hut restaurant has closed after inspectors found more than 200 live cockroaches inside.

The restaurant was closed temporarily after it was checked Thursday.

“The restaurant was shut down due to roach infestation,” said Kay Johnson, director of Wichita’s environmental services department.

City inspectors were at the restaurant Friday while a private exterminator was there.

“They were not forced to close,” said Joe Blubaugh, spokesman for the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. “They voluntarily closed so that they could take care of the concern.” He said generally, if inspectors find 10 pests, they consider it an infestation.

Pizza Hut did not return calls seeking comment Friday night and Saturday.

“We always want to try to help them out,” Johnson said of owners who are trying to follow procedures. “We don’t want to see them close any longer than what they need to be.”

The restaurant will stay closed through the weekend, she said.

The voluntary closing came after the restaurant was checked Thursday by inspectors for the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

The state health department did not have written details of the inspector’s report Friday.

A state inspection report from March found that the restaurant received noncompliance ratings for several conditions, including lack of insect control devices and not removing dead pests.

That report indicated another inspection was not required.

“We always want to work with the facility to bring them back into compliance,” Blubaugh said.
