Overbrook parade slated

America’s National Parks will be the theme for this year’s Overbrook parade.

The “Almost World-Famous” event will take place at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 10 and 6 p.m. Aug. 11. Denise Hoback, an organizer for the event, said that it was tradition to have two parades and prizes are given away both nights.

Entries for the parade are due by Aug. 6, to Scott Averill or Denise Hoback at Brookside Retirement Community, 700 W. Seventh St., Overbrook, 66524. Participants also can receive a list of rules and submit entries by calling (785) 665-7124 or (785) 244-3453.

The parade will offer special entertainment cash awards. The criteria for the awards, which range from $500 to $100, will be creativity, enthusiasm and crowd response. Awards for floats will range from $50 to $25 and will be judged on theme, color, neatness and skirt design and arrangement.

Parade organizers are encouraging participating schools to bring flag corps, cheerleaders, drum lines and drill teams.

Overbrook is 25 miles southwest of Lawrence on U.S. Highway 56.
