Ryun leaving door open to seeking public office
Topeka ? Former GOP Rep. Jim Ryun is leaving the door open to a future run for public office and says the media is partly to blame for his re-election loss.
Ryun, who lost his 2nd Congressional District seat to Democrat Nancy Boyda in November, told The Topeka-Capital Journal’s editorial board on Thursday that unfair reporting by the newspaper caused him to lose support.
Ryun cited the newspaper’s stories about how well Ryun knew Rep. Mark Foley, the Florida Republican who resigned after disclosure that he sent sexually suggestive messages to teenage House pages.
The Capital-Journal reported in October that Ryun claimed he had only recently discovered that Foley lived across the street from Ryun’s Capitol Hill town house. The story also noted that Ryun had participated in a “block party” several months earlier in which Foley and other lawmakers living on the same street held fundraisers in their homes at the same time.
Ryun’s campaign manager, Jeffrey Black, at first told the newspaper the event was not jointly planned. But in a second story, Black told The Capital-Journal that Ryun had always known Foley lived across the street. Black also told the newspaper the block party was coordinated by campaign staff.
Editors at the newspaper denied the articles were unfair.
Ryun said he is not bitter about losing the race.
Asked if he would run for the U.S. Senate after Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan., steps down, Ryun said, “We’re leaving all options on the table.”
