Third man sentenced in slaying of musician

? A third man was sentenced Friday in the shooting death of a Kansas City Symphony musician.

Michael A. Jones, 19, agreed to a plea deal in the killing of Steven Peters, a 51-year-old double bass player. Peters died in September 2005 at his Independence duplex in what Jackson County prosecutors described as a botched burglary.

Under the plea agreement, Jones was sentenced in Jackson County Circuit Court in Independence to 10 years in prison for second-degree murder and three years for armed criminal action. The sentences will be served at the same time.

Two other suspects – Richard Jones, of Kansas City, and Sylvon Sese, of Independence – have been sentenced to 25 years in prison. Jonathan A. Box, of Lee’s Summit, is awaiting sentencing.

Police have said the suspects planned to break into Peters’ home, tie him up and steal military-type firearms they believed he kept. But Peters greeted the burglars with a handgun and shots were fired, killing Peters and wounding one suspect in the arm.
