State fair unveils new slogan
Hutchinson ? Kansans will be asked to “hang with the hogs” or “pick up the bunnies” at this September’s Kansas State Fair.
Fair officials unveiled the new twist to it’s “It’s a Wild Ride, Baby!” advertising campaign during a meeting in Topeka on Friday.
The proposed billboard, poster and television advertisements include a goggle-wearing, motorcycle-driving hog with a female pig companion urging people to “hang with the hogs.”
Additional taglines using colorful, cartoon animals would be “check out the studs” and “pick up bunnies.”
The fair’s assistant general manager, Lori Mulch, said fair officials hope that refreshing the ad campaign, rather than completely revamping it, would be the most cost-effective way to continue an effort to appeal to younger potential fairgoers.
The updated promotions were concocted by the Greteman Group of Wichita, which has handled the fair’s advertising for the past three events.
“I think they did good,” said board member Mary Alice Lair.
Last year, the fair spent around $200,000 on marketing, with an emphasis on increasing Hispanic attendance. That effort resulted in a 6 percent increase in attendance at the 2006 fair.
Although that gave the fair more revenue for this year, the fair board plans to ask the Kansas Legislature for a $500,000 budget increase to help alleviate a 28 percent increase in utility costs.
Fair officials also discussed the proposed construction of a 180-foot cellular phone tower.
Fair general manager Denny Stoecklein said that a company is offering the fair $6,000 a year in rent to build the tower on for fair property to provide mobile phone coverage.
