Proposal deadline for casino passes

? The future of a Sumner County casino will now begin to take shape.

The deadline for companies wanting to build a casino in the county passed Friday with the Kansas Lottery receiving no new proposals.

Four developers have already provided casino proposals for the county south of Wichita. Lottery staff will review the proposals and begin negotiating contracts with the companies.

Sumner County commissioners have endorsed plans by Penn National Gaming and Marvel Gaming-Binion Family Trust, both of whom want to build near Wellington in the southern end of the county. But lottery officials said they will continue negotiating with all four developers because local endorsement isn’t necessary until they have a signed contract.

MGM Mirage-Foxwoods Development-Chisholm Creek and Harrah’s Entertainment-Sumner Gaming have proposed building near Mulvane along the county’s northern border with Sedgwick County.

Mulvane residents and county officials have opposed such a location, noting that Sedgwick County voted against a casino and part of Mulvane lies in Sedgwick.

On Wednesday, the MGM-Foxwoods-Chisholm Creek group added a Wellington location to its proposal. None of the other developers made any changes to their plans and Harrah’s remains committed to its Mulvane location.
