School board member accused of making threats

? A Southeast of Saline school board member already accused of threatening to “do a Columbine” at the district’s school during an argument with his teacher wife is now charged with threatening a county official.

Gary Olson, 43, of Gypsum, is being held in the Saline County Jail without bond on a criminal threat charge. Authorities say Olson was arrested Thursday after Vicki Koepsel, director of the Saline County Planning and Zoning Department, reported that Olson had threatened to get a gun and shoot her during a dispute over property Olson owns.

Olson’s attorney, Roger Struble, said Saturday that his client maintains his innocence and that the earlier accusations may have played a part in how authorities reacted to Koepsel’s allegation.

The earlier incident stemmed from an argument Olson had with his wife, Connie Olson, over who would take their children to school.

Gary Olson faces trial next month on aggravated criminal threat and other charges for allegedly telling his wife, an elementary teacher at Southeast of Saline, that he was going to “go to the school and do a Columbine.” The school was locked down for several hours while authorities looked for Olson after the alleged threat was made Sept. 5.

Olson allegedly made the statement to his wife during a phone call while she was driving their children to the school.

Connie Olson resigned from her teaching job after the incident.

Gary Olson remains a member of the school board, but he is barred from participating in board meetings and other school district events as a condition of his bond.

Struble noted that case had received a lot of publicity, possibly affecting both the upcoming Jan. 22 trial and the sheriff’s department response to Koespel’s accusation.

“There’s a lot of things in the first case that haven’t come to light yet, so that’s what we have to look forward to in the end of January,” Struble said without elaboration.

Sheriff Glen Kochanowski said that in the latest incident, Olson was unhappy with Koepsel’s explanation about county policies related to property Olson owns in Kipp. He told The Salina Journal on Friday that Olson is accused of telling Koepsel something to the effect of, “It looks like I’m going to have to get a gun and shoot you.”
