Coroner rules out foul play in KC death

Woman with twins in apartment died from natural causes

? A woman found dead in her suburban Kansas City apartment last month with her infant twins nearby died of undetermined natural causes, according to the Kansas medical examiner’s office.

Because Virginia Njoroge had been dead for several days, her body was too decomposed to determine the exact cause of death, Johnson County deputy coroner Michael Handler said.

Foul play has been ruled out, Handler said, and there were no drugs in Njoroge’s system or any evidence of complications from her pregnancy, such as bleeding.

Njoroge’s body was found Nov. 16 after a neighbor reported that she had not seen her for several days. The neighbor said she smelled a foul odor coming from Njoroge’s Olathe apartment.

Emergency crews who went to the apartment also found Njoroge’s 3-week-old twins, after seeing car seats and other baby items. The twins were both malnourished. They were lying under a bed.

Police said they have not been able to determine how the babies got in the position in which they were found. They were just under the bed in a space between the bed and a wall.

The baby girl later died, and the boy was placed with relatives after being released from a hospital.

Following the deaths of Njoroge and her infant daughter, the Organization of Kenyans in Kansas City paid for the woman and child’s body to be sent to Kenya for burial. Njoroge, 36, was originally from Kenya.

She was not a member of the organization, but group members said they felt a connection to her and wanted to help. They raised about $11,000 to ship the bodies.

Hophine Bwosinde, the organization’s president, said the bodies left Wednesday.
